Spotlight On: Digital Mammography

In just 60 years, the technology behind breast imaging, and mammograms specifically, has come a long way. In the 1960s, radiologists performed mammograms by laying a flat x-ray machine against a woman’s chest. Decades later, radiologists discovered that compressing a woman’s breast between two x-ray machines gave a more detailed picture, and the standard mammogram was born. Now, years later, radiologists are benefiting from digital mammograms.

#MammoTalk Recap

In case you missed it, earlier this week the Society of Breast Imaging hosted a #MammoTalk with breast imaging experts to provide some much needed clarity about mammography. Here are some of our key takeaways from the discussion:

Women’s Health: Breast Cancer Imaging Services

At Medical Arts Radiology, we provide comprehensive, individualized breast cancer screening services in designated women’s imaging centers within our facilities. Our goal is to provide a relaxing and private atmosphere, designed to make all women feel comfortable and safe. We understand that this is a stressful and emotional time for women, which is why we try to provide patients with same day results after a breast exam.

Understanding Imaging Tests

Imaging tests - like x-rays, mammograms, and MRI to name a few - are ways to let doctors see what’s happening within your body. These tests send forms of energy like sound waves or magnetic fields through your body and as the energy changes patterns due to body tissues, an image or picture is created. With these pictures, doctors are able to see normal body structures and functions as well as any abnormalities due to diseases like cancer.

Mammogram Myths

Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. With Breast Cancer Awareness Month around the corner, we want to highlight the importance of mammography for early detection of this all too common disease.
