March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

“Now, therefore, I, William J. Clinton, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 2000 as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.” It was 17 years ago that President Clinton declared March, National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in an effort to encourage healthcare providers, advocacy groups, policymakers, and citizens to help raise awareness of this “silent disease.” This year, it’s estimated that there will be 135,400 new cases and 50,300 deaths as a result of colon and rectal (also known as colorectal) cancer. But by knowing your risks and getting tested annually, you can help reduce this number.
